Jigsaw Puzzles, A Great Gift With A Lot To Offer!

Here comes the holiday season again, gasp! That means chasing all over town searching for that perfect gift for everyone on your list, fighting with the crowds for the latest "it" toy or newest electronic thing-a-ma-jig, right?

Why not try a different approach this year, and give some- thing special to your family and friends? Jigsaw puzzles could be the answer!

My love of jigsaw puzzles comes from my Grandmother.

My grandmother lived in a very small town in northern Minnesota where the moquitos out number the people. It certainly was a boring place to spend a summer vacation as a kid. What was worse I realized, Grandma didn't have cable TV! Out of sheer boredom, I sat down with her while she worked a puzzle.

Grandma was smart, she had an extra chair and some cookies waiting for me to join her.

There is one puzzle I remember clearly, it was a picture of a red and white quilt and it was huge! It must have been 2000 pieces and it took up the entire dinning room table. I was sure there was no way anyone could ever get that whole puzzle put together, it was simply too hard. It took some time but after I found a few pieces and had completed one square of the quilt I was hooked. Every day I looked forward to working on the puzzle, and every piece found was a triumph! It took a few weeks, but we finally finished that puzzle, and all of Grandma's famous sugar cookies too!

I felt proud of what we accomplished and that I was able to help. We left it on the table for a couple of days to admire our work. Soon I discovered the rest of Grandma's puzzle collection and I couldn't wait to dig into a new puzzle!

Looking back on this now as an adult and a mom myself, I realize that this simple pastime gave me many things. At first I didn't think it was possible to complete the jigsaw puzzle, but once it was done I felt a great sense of pride and accomplish- ment. More importantly, the real gift was quality time, great conversation and fantastic memories of my Grandmother. ( And I still have her cookie recipe!)

So before you rush out to buy the latest "batteries not included" flashing light gadget, take a second look at this old fashioned gift. You may get more back then you expected.

Tips to make a jigsaw puzzle a hit this holiday season

Jigsaw puzzles are more fun when they are part of a bigger plan.

Give tickets to your local zoo with an animal puzzle, or tickets to an aquarium with an underwater puzzle.

Find a puzzle of your next vacation destination, or someplace you would like to visit someday.

Start a new family tradition and work a puzzle together.

Look for a puzzle with a fantastic winter scene, or holiday celebration to get you into that Christmas spirit. Turn off the television and turn on some Christmas music and enjoy some time with your family.

Jigsaw puzzles can add to a collection.

Perhaps someone you know collects dragons, dolphins, or roosters for instance, look for a puzzle with those things and you've got a great gift.

Jigsaw puzzles can be used to decorate your home.

Jigsaw puzzles can be easily glued together and hung up as artwork. Keep the theme of your children's rooms, and your dining room in mind as you look for a puzzle, you can fill your home with art work you made yourself!

Things to look for when purchasing a jigsaw puzzle:

1) Picture :

I think the most important thing to look for when purchasing a jigsaw puzzle is the picture itself. Puzzles are meant to be fun, so find a picture that makes you smile! Have fun!

2) Size and Piece count:

You should pay attention to the piece count, make sure it is appropriate to the age and skill of the puzzler. 500 pieces may be to hard for your 6 year old to do solo, but may be perfect for the family to do together.

The size of the completed puzzle is important. Make sure the area you will assemble the puzzle will hold the puzzle and have extra room for the un assembled puzzle pieces.

3) Quality:

A quality puzzle is well worth the price! Vibrant colors, tightly fitting pieces etc. will make assembling the puzzle more enjoyable.

It is frustrating to have the paper fall off the cardboard of a puzzle piece or to have thin pieces that break easily.

4) Challenge level:

While choosing a puzzle, keep in mind that a puzzle of a solid color or repeating pattern may make it more difficult then a puzzle with a variety of colors. Example, a puzzle of black cat on a black blanket even though it is only 500 pieces may be extra challenging.

Keep this in mind, but remember a puzzle is supposed to be a challenge!

5) Specialty Puzzles:

The first thing that comes to mind when you think of a puzzle may be a rectangle shape with a picture of a field of flowers. If this sounds boring to you keep looking! There are many unique puzzles out there.

Shaped puzzles are puzzles that have a unique border shape.

Such as in the shape of a dog or of an eagle in flight. These puzzles offer a a challenge to those who always work the border of a puzzle first. Round puzzles are some of my favorites to work because of the unusual way the pieces are cut!

Glow In The Dark puzzles look like a standard puzzle but parts of the design will glow in the dark making them a great choice to glue and save!
Tips for getting started:

Now that you have a puzzle, and a place to work it, you are a little overwhelmed by looking at that huge pile of pieces. Now what?

1) Lighting A bright place to work will reduce eye strain and make for a more enjoyable experience.

2) Sort your pieces I like to turn all the pieces right side up first as well as sorting the edge pieces right away. I have also found that using boxes or small containers to sort the different colors into is very helpful! ( The boxes of previously worked puzzles that you have glued together to display are perfect for this.)

3) Enlist help I have found that it is nearly impossible to walk past someone who is working a puzzle without stopping to find a few pieces myself.

Puzzles are a great way to pass time and you may have a wonderful conversation too!

4) Puzzle roll ups If you need to use the dining room table again, and you are not finished with your puzzle yet, don't despair! A puzzle roll up will help you move and store your unfinished puzzle for another day! Puzzle roll ups are available in a variety of sizes.

5) Puzzle Glue Once you have completed your puzzle it can be heart breaking to take it apart again. If you really like the design, or just want to show off your hard work, it is a simple task to glue the puzzle together and hang it on your wall! A good puzzle glue will dry clear so it doesn't distort the beauty of the colors. Puzzle glue is brushed on, and when it is dry you can frame the puzzle, or hang it up as is. Keep the decor of your home in mind when you are buying puzzles, and you can fill your home with art you made yourself!

6) Afterwards...

If you have completed a puzzle and don't wish to work it again here are several ideas for you. Pass it on! Know a friend that enjoys puzzles? Exchange your completed puzzles with them! Donate puzzles to local schools, churches, nursing homes etc.

Crossword Puzzles For Active Minds

Use it or lose it, most definitely applies to our brains. How many of us actually remember all we were taught at school. I know some would say that much of what we learned was pointless. I guess I don't really need to know how many millions of miles away the sun and the moon are.

One thing I do know is that most of the elderly people I come into contact with, who still have a spring in their step, have one or two things in common. They have kept their mind and bodies active.

Completing crossword puzzles is a popular way to keep the mind active in ones latter years. Crossword puzzles certainly keep our brains ticking over and the more it's used the better we become. The great thing with crosswords is that you can start work on easier puzzles and eventually progress to the more challenging.

Crossword puzzles are not just great mind activators for the elderly. Students can also benefit from themed crossword puzzles, as they are a great way to review a recently learned subject.

Word puzzles can and do sharpen the mind. As with anything, the more you do, the easier it gets. Keeping our minds and bodies active is a good way to ensure we are doing our best to prepare ourselves for a long and enjoyable retirement.

We are told that our brains have a tremendous capacity for learning and storing new information. Why not give it a regular work out with a good crossword puzzle and ensure that you are “Using It”.

Teaching Reading To Your Child

One of the most effective teaching methods for children is to use materials that the child has a natural interest in. Teaching reading to your child is no exception. Our kids (as I’m sure most kids) have a natural interest in animals. Right from the beginning we had great success using their natural curiosity and affection for animals to teach the basic formations and sounds that are associated with the letters and pictures. This naturally progressed into using the same to aid in teaching reading to them as well.

There are several children’s magazines available for you that are dedicated to the animal child connection. As our kids got a bit older we even subscribed to a couple of the magazines for them. You talk about generating an interest! Just wait till the kids realize that every so often the mailman brings them a present. They couldn’t wait and it certainly helped us with teaching reading to both of the kids. If your kids, are struggling to read or maybe struggling to get interested in reading, use a tool that they are naturally interested in. For us, the animal stories and magazines were a great way for us to get started teaching reading.

Find a magazine that seems to fit the age level of your child. For younger children, I recommend one that has big bright colorful pictures with interesting facts. One of our favorite children’s magazines is Zoobooks. Some even have interactive puzzles and games the child can play and learn. A simple search on the internet of “children + animals + magazine” will turn up many choices for you.

Teaching reading to your child is 100 times easier when you employ the use of a subject that children naturally want to know more about. In fact, one thing that we discovered was that once the one of the magazines had been used and was no longer current, they made great tools for the kids to cut some of the pictures out and make bulletin boards, calendars, and it made a great start in getting to the next level of reading by learning to make up their own stories and adventures using the pictures they cut out and the information from the magazines!

Whatever you choice of tools you are considering using to teach reading to your child, I highly recommend the use of some good children’s magazines.

Giving Educational Toys

Toys that provide educational value as well as fun are generally more valuable to children and will benefit them better in the long run. If a gift proves to be practical and useful to the recipient, we as gift givers also get a special sense of satisfaction and fulfillment, knowing that we gave a good present that should serve its purpose fully. Lots of educational toys abound in shopping malls and on the Internet, and selecting the appropriate toys for your children can prove to be a chore if you don’t know what you’re doing.

Here are some helpful hints and tips to guide you in looking for the best educational toys for your toddler:

Let them puzzle it out – Puzzles are always favorites of children, whether 2 years old or 13. If your child is 2 years old or below, then alphabet puzzles and similar items would be best, as well as numbers, colors, or shapes-related puzzles. Audio and time-related puzzles work best for children between 3 to 5 years old. Older kids will prefer puzzles related to word forming, maps, space, and math.

Arts and Crafts – Develop your child’s creativity by giving them arts and crafts kits and supplies. Things like clay, drawing and coloring books, colored pens and pencils, painting sets, and even a basic children’s digital camera will work wonders. These gifts will allow them to use and develop their knowledge, imagination, and coordination.

Books – Books are never out of style, and the selection of children’s books that are available today keep getting better and better. They are just filled to the brim with valuable information and are arranged in a way that will be sure to provide your kids with hours and hours of reading pleasure and fun, while getting the knowledge that will later on prove to be invaluable. There are children’s books about science, math, reading, grammar, colors, shapes, etc. Older kids will also love inspirational biographies of famous historical figures.

CDs and DVDs – Another favorite gift item for children that’s sure to be a hit is a CD or DVD filled with lots of fun and knowledge. Easy-to-follow and catchy songs, audio storybooks, rhymes, and much more can be found in these multimedia marvels for children. They can even start learning a second language, or know all sorts of fun and interesting trivia.

Block Them – Countless blocks of all sizes, shapes, and colors are easily found in your local shopping mall, toy store, or in specialty shops on the World Wide Web. Blocks are actually the first educational toys, and probably also the first to be played with by your children even when he or she is still a baby. They are invaluable for teaching kids all about the alphabet, colors, shapes, and numbers. Of course, blocks are also important tools for developing a child’s imagination, allowing him or her to freely build and stack according to his own whims and designs.

Board Games – There are plenty of great board games for children of all ages to play and learn with. Aside from providing them hours of fun and entertainment while learning, board games are also a great way for parents and children to spend quality time together. Parents can teach their kids all about fair play, following the rules, how to create strategies for winning, etc.

Our Skillful Skulls

It’s rather hard to imagine our lives without our minds, for I seriously doubt we could imagine anything. We would probably resemble all those mindless creepy creatures in us we need to nourish everyday; but since we realize we need them to exist, we shouldn’t mind.
However, I still don’t mind saying that a mind without an imagination will always remain a creepy thing...for without our imagination, we wouldn’t know what to do with the knowledge in our minds. Our minds and imaginations, when co-operating, make a very highly efficient and exceptional team – we blazon forth with an assortment of splendid, flashy, and magnificent speculative notions. Without them, we would never be capable of relishing the delight of a stroll in a warm summer rain, relaxing on a mesa or the desert contemplating a beautiful sunset, snoring in a forest
under the stars, watching the clouds roll by, noticing your tire is flat, nor any of the other wonders of life – and we surely couldn’t imagine what the hell this is all about. If we consumed more of our time exercising our minds and imaginations, there’s no imagining what we could imagine to accomplish with them. We could practice by imagining that politicians were honest, we won the lottery, the IRS sends us a refund instead of an audit notice, or that our blind date is perfect. But just imagine if we had the imagination of a child. When a child is playing with an imaginary friend, we imagine the child’s friend is imaginary – but in the child’s mind, his imaginary friend is not imaginary, it’s real! It’s real because we live our lives in our minds. Our biological mind is an ultra-elaborate, and magnificent conglomeration of genetic engineering. It embodies all types of neat stuff – nerve cells, synapses, glia, neurotransmitters, cortex, occipital lobe, thalamus, hippo campus, amygdala, and all enclosed by the cerebral cortex – of course; it has an abundance of other compact and tidy systems. It goes about its duty 24 hours a day, everyday, for every second of our lives. As with our other parts, it needs to be exercised. And how do we do that? This is the really great part – it’s easy!

We learn! It’s like a sponge; it has all this tremendous capacity and monstrous capabilities. It wants to soak up knowledge constantly, and show off what it can do. We need to read, play, write, word puzzles, figures, walk, run, think, tell good jokes, see, hear, taste, smell touch, be aware, eat healthy food, increase our morals, observe, learn new skills, talk, sing, orate, instruct, make decisions, and as you know, we could go on for months. Another amazing aspect of our mind is when we relax and read, write (or whatever), and concentrate on what we are
doing. The mind engages our imagination automatically –and when they work in tandem, we not only absorb and retain more data, we become more creative...for the imagination and mind search all the information in our data banks, and play with it. So, as we can see, the more data in our storage vault, the more creative we can be. Using deductive logic; the more we learn, the more creative we are, the more opportunities we will have, the more money we could earn, the better our
attitude, the more interesting we are to be with and converse with, the more capable we will be to help others – plus, it will be easier to relax due to less stress, all of which translates into more happiness...imagine that!

A magical mind (achieved through study), strengthened with an immense imagination (achieved through regular practice) plugged into a faultless faith (achieved through relaxing and doing what we should), and all operating in
conjunction with a clean character (achieved by having morals and principles), and encased in a single anatomy (already achieved), is a combination that absolutely knows no boundaries.

Restless Relaxation

There are bushels of benefits to relaxation! Those who walk, talk, work, and play relaxed have a special aura about them. Their enemies become all jealous and nervous, and wonder what they’re up to.
An ideal example of a poised individual mastering her environment prevails every Thursday morning at a “bread company” in Winchester, Mo. Several of us “elderly gentlemen” (old farts) congregate our happy selves here (I say “here” because I’m here now). We compare aches and pains, operations, relate funny jokes, narrate stories that would make great episodes in some twilight zone (we lie), and cannot comprehend why the president won’t return our phone calls, for we are proud of ourselves for creating the perfect solutions to all the world’s puzzles.
Of course (once in a while), we watch all the sexy sirens (Yep, I’m still normal)! This one siren slowly promenades in at a deliberate pace, and has developed all the beautiful assets, in all the correct locations, and they do all the right things at the right time. As she strolls in with all that ingratiating grace, and Mona Lisa smile, we “esquires” realize that there are still particular occasions in our lives we have yet to master control over– we stutter, drool, our eyes glaze over and roll back into our heads, our hand’s quaver, our legs tremble, and beautiful memories flow before our mind’s eye.
Yes; proper etiquette demands we stand up when a lady like her enters, but we sweet, holy, innocent, and naive fellows are too embarrassed --- uuuuuuh, because our difibulators are firing! Where was I? Oh yeah, now I remember!
A few other advantages to relaxing are akin to meditating. Our synaptic connections become more dynamic vacuum systems, and suck up more knowledge, our concentration is clearer and more enthusiastic, our memory stores more, our hearing is more acute, and our imaginations are more inventive... just imagine, all that, and all we were trying to do is relax!

How To Make Money With Online Jigsaw Puzzles

After spending less than an hour sat in front of my computer I made myself a cool £10 ($20). OK, its not mega bucks, but all I did was to put together a few simple online jigsaw puzzles. And when I say simple jigsaw puzzles, I do mean simple.

I’m talking about 20 piece jigsaw puzzles here. They are that simple a child could put them together within a few minutes. But I can manage to complete them in about one minute – I told you they were easy.

Although I can play for free if I want to, I like to play online with my friends for small wagers of up to $2 a game. And because these online jigsaw puzzles are skill based games, they are not classed as gambling, so I can also play anyone that might be the website at the time, wherever they might be in the world and without having issues with gambling laws within their country. But there is another big advantage of playing online.

The games website that I play on comes with a built in opportunity to make money from promoting the games website to other online games players. So when I introduce someone, I get a percentage of their stake if they decide to play for money. But here’s the best part.

It’s not difficult to introduce people to online games of skill when your games website comes with a built in Blog and Instant Messenger which is compatible with your Yahoo, MSN and Google Instant Messengers, so you can simply challenge your friends to a free game whilst you are chatting online.

Once your friends have registered on your website, you get a cut of the game rake on every future game that they might play for money, no matter who they play or how many times they play. How cool is that?

If you like the idea of this new concept in online gaming, the game that I compete in is called Jigsaw Wars and you can find out more about it on the Online Jigsaw Puzzles website.

Animal 4D Toy Puzzles

There are different kinds of people. There are those who love taking things as they already are. There are those who would rather go through some hurdles to be actually satisfied. Those who love puzzles and challenges are part of the latter and these are the people who really enjoy things if they slaved over it first.

People who belong to the mentioned group would actually love the 4D puzzles that can be found over at Gadget Epoint. These puzzles are not your ordinary puzzles that you would have to solve. See, this one is unique in such a way that they actually form a figure. One of the most popular 4D puzzle that you can find there are the animal 4D puzzles. There is quite a range of animal puzzles that you could choose from.

Although at first you would think that building a 4D puzzle is quite weird, it is actually something really fun for those who love challenges. If you are going to build a 4D puzzle, you would have to think things differently. You are not solving pieces on a flat surface. Each of these animal 4D puzzles would actually form a figure that would look like the real thing. For example, if you have an animal 4D puzzle of a tiger, those little bits and pieces would actually form a real-looking tiger if you put them all together right. If not, then you would not be able to see what the 4D tiger would really look like.

What animals are available now, you may ask? There are various 4D toy puzzles available and you could actually choose from cats, dogs, hedgehogs, horses, and cows. Each one contains around 30 pieces of puzzle pieces that you would have to put together to be able to finish the whole puzzle.

History Of Crossword Puzzles

The first book of crosswords was published in 1924. It became a best-seller and crosswords replaced mahjongg as the most popular American game. Crossword puzzle design and solving is an excellent way to sharpen focus. Regardless of whether design and or solve numerous crossword puzzles, you will learn one more way to enhance memory and creative expression. Some even say that crossword puzzles help keep Alzheimer's at bay.

Nearly all word games improve spelling, the appeal of word-games is very easy to understand. Crossword puzzles encourage logical thinking and correct spelling. Some of crossword clues are straightforward and only require a wide vocabulary. However some contain devious clues, where there is always a logical link between the clue and the solution.

Some of crossword clues are straightforward and only need a wide vocabulary. While other clues induce a probability distribution over viable targets, which must somehow be respected along with the constraints of the puzzle. However devious the clue, there is always, in a well-set crossword puzzle a logical link between the clue and the solution. At best, clues induce a probability distribution over viable targets, which must somehow be respected along with the constraints of the puzzle. Some have begun using computers to solve crosswords, while others solve crosswords using the familiar and time-honored tradition of putting pen to paper. Crosswords encourage people to use dictionaries, both specialized crossword dictionaries as well as collegiate and unabridged dictionary volumes. Some believe that the pen and pencil mode indicate a degree of confidence in solutions and problem solving. Crossword puzzlers should always remember, that just because you wrote something down, doesn't make it right.

All in all, crosswords are very inexpensive, intellectually stimulating, calls for no partner and, most importantly, helps one forget the stresses and tensions of modern living. Intellectual stimulation is sought by the very intelligent and crosswords offer a release from mental tension. Creative crosswords afford little of that intellectual excitement that a more complicated crossword does. Crossword puzzles are very popular in many countries.

Teamwork And Jigsaw Puzzles

All of us talk of team work. Sports thrive on teams. Every business wants to develop winning teams. Every president or prime minister brings his own team. What is there in teams? A team is needed because a lone person can not handle all the work. So one gathers different experts, creates a team, sits back and hopes that the team will bring in great results in a short time. But many times, the team proves to be a dismal failure. Why?

Let us talk of human psychology for a moment. Ego, that is the first to kill the team spirit. Why should I work under him/her? Why should I give in and accept what you say. What I say is correct and all of you are out of your senses! Ego. This is the first danger in a good team. You must have played with jigsaw puzzles. Unless, every piece fits in, you will never get the whole picture.

Whether the piece is small or big, whether it looks good or bad, it has its place in the picture and you must fit that ugly looking small piece to get the picture right. Are you getting it? One of the team members may be the sharpest and smartest person going around, but unless he/she gets support from other members for whom he/she has no respect, the team will not achieve results. Respect for individuals is the most essential part of a good team. Trying to take care of each other's weaknesses and complementing them with your strengths will bring a balance. Appreciating the smallest achievement and ignoring mistakes will make team happy gathering.

But the first need for a good team is to work towards a common goal. The goal that excites ever member. A goal that everyone wants to achieve. A goal that fires their imagination and a goal that can make them ignore the hardship of work. Goals that will make all of them feel great, when achieved. Goals are the first and the most essential part of a team's success. If a team is not motivated to achieve a goal, that team will fail.

A very good method is to download few motivational screensavers to know more about goals, success, management and thoughts that will fire the imagination and make a person, a great team leader and member. You can also send inspirational greetings to friends and colleagues. So inspire others and remain inspired yourself.

Brainteaser Puzzles

Predicting the Color (Logic Brainteaser Puzzle)

There are three boxes labeled ‘red balls’, ‘White balls’ and ‘red and white balls’. Each of the labels is incorrect. You are allowed to take one ball only from each box. How can you label each box correctly?

(Of course, you are not allowed to look inside!)

Clue for the Puzzle:

It will be sufficient to correctly identify one box. We know that all the boxes are incorrectly labeled. Once one box has been correctly identified, all we need to do is to switch the labels on the other two boxes.

Answer for the Puzzle:

The first thing to do is to take a ball from the box incorrectly labeled ‘red and white balls’. If it is red, then clearly this is the box containing red balls. If white, then white. Since we know that the boxes are all incorrectly labeled it is now sufficient to switch the two remaining labels.

Job Interview (Logic Brainteaser Puzzle)

An employer was very anxious to find the most intelligent of the three men who had applied for a job. So he told them: ‘here are five conical hats. Three are white and two are black. I shall place a hat on each of your heads. When you turn around, you will be able to see the others’ hats but not your own. The first one to tell me the color of his own hat will get the job.’ He then placed a white hat on each man’s head. When the three men turned to face each other there was a long silence. Then, suddenly, one of the candidates said, ‘Mine is white.’

How did he know?

Clue for the Puzzle:

There are three possible combinations: two men had black hats and one a white one (this must be excluded because if one man had seen two black hats, he would immediately have known his was white); two had white hats and one had a black one; all three had white hats.

The secret is to work out the color of one’s own hat from what the other people must able to see.

Answer for the Puzzle:

He could see two white hats. Therefore he might have had on either a white or a black hat. He then reasoned like this: Suppose my hat is black. If it is, my two rivals A and B can each see a black hat and a white hat. One of them (A) might then work out that his own hat could not be black because, if it were, B would see two black hats and would know that his own hat must therefore be white. B says nothing however. A might therefore conclude, if my hat is black, then his own hat must be white. But since he does not come to this conclusion, then my assumption that my hat is black must be false. Therefore my hat must be white.

Ali the Thief (Survival Brainteaser Puzzle)

Ali the thief had managed to break into the Sultan’s treasure room. He was looking for a bag containing 1250 diamonds, each weighing 0.8 grams. Unfortunately, the Sultan had filled nine other bags with imitation diamonds. There were 1000 in each bag, each one weighing 1 gram. So all 10 bags weighed exactly 1000 grams and all the bags looked exactly alike. Just as Ali was scratching his head, the Sultan burst in with his guards. As he was a merciful Sultan, he gave Ali a chance to save his life. Here is what he said; “If you can find the bag which contains the real diamonds by using these scales just once, you may keep the diamonds. If not, you will be beheaded. You can take stones from any of the bags and put them in other bags if you wish but you can only weigh once!”

How did Ali save his neck?

Clue for the Puzzle:

Suppose there were only three bags. If Ali took one stone from bag no. 1, two from bag no. 2, and three from bag no. 3 and weighed them together, would he be able to tell which the bag of diamonds was?

Answer for the Puzzle:

Ali put the bags in a row and removed one stone from the first bag, two from the second, three from the third, etc. He therefore had 55 stones. If all the stones weighed 1 gram, the total weight would be 55 grams. But Ali knew that some were 0.2 grams lighter. So supposing the total weight had been 54.6 grams, he would have known that it was bag no.2 which contained the diamonds (53 stones at 1 gram and two stones at 0.8 gram each = 1.6 grams). If the total had weighed 54.2 grams, he would have known it was the fourth bag he was looking for (51 stones at 1 gram and 4 stones at 0.8 gram each = 3.2 grams). In this way he could locate the bag with the real diamonds with no trouble at all.

No place like Vegas (Gambling Brainteaser Puzzle)

Las Vegas is the place for gambling in America. I was just coming out of a Casino when a man came up to me and said “I’ll bet you $5 that if you give me $10, I’ll give you $15.” What do you think I did?

Clue for the Puzzle:

What would be the result if he lost the bet?

Answer for the Puzzle:

I told him to go and look for another fool to try it on! If I had accepted his bet and given him the $10, he would simply have said “I lose the bet.” He would then have given me the $5 he had bet me. But I would have lost the other $5 through my stupidity.

Sudoku Puzzles

Sudoku Puzzles, which are also popularly known as the Number Place, was originally a game puzzle published for a newspaper in France. The year 1895 saw the birth of the said puzzle game. The Number Place puzzle was subsequently revived during the mid-80s in Japan and was later known as the Sudoku Puzzles. It started to gain its popularity among the international community during 2005.

During the revival of what was originally the Number Place puzzle in Japan, publishers abbreviated the phrase “suuji wa dokushin ni kagiru”, which literally meant “the digits must remain single”, and came up with the more popular name, Sudoku Puzzles.

The Sudoku Puzzles, unlike others, have a very easy instruction to follow. Although numbers have been conventionally used as the symbol or character for the puzzle, some of its variations substitute the numbers with letters, geometric figures, and others. Another version of the puzzle even used the positions in a baseball game to replace the numbers between one and nine. The characters used are actually irrelevant to the objective of the game itself.

The logic of the Sudoku puzzles is very simple. A grid with a dimension that is usually 3x3, the region, is found inside an outer grid with a consequent dimension of usually 9x9. All in all therefore, a total of 81 mini squares could be found. Some of these mini squares are marked by a certain character. Take for example, any number between 1 – 9. These characters are what they call the givens. The objective of the game is to place the numbers within the specified range. Also, these numbers must be placed in all the remaining blocks. The difficult part now rests on the task of making sure that horizontally, vertically, and regionally, there is no repetition of any of the numbers within the specified range.

The said puzzle games then became known as a type of game that would stimulate a person's logical reasoning, as well as other mental faculties. Some teachers even suggest this game to be able to stimulate and exercise the said cognitive function. Although it seems simple enough to solve, solving an entire puzzle would require complex mental functions. The mental functions needed will depend on the complexity of the given Sudoku Puzzles.

Some puzzles for the novice solvers come as big as a 25x25 grid. This would mean that there would be a total of 625 characters that need to be placed in an order that would satisfy the conditions of the puzzle. However, Sudoku Puzzles also cater to young people who are delighted by finding solutions to problems. A 4x4 version of the puzzle is available for kids to practice on.

Newspapers in the 1800s were good enough to supply their audience with a daily dose of the Sudoku Puzzles. This allowed for the puzzle to gain great popularity among fans of brain-twisters. It actually became as regular, during that time, as the more common crossword puzzle of our current daily newspaper.

Sudoku Puzzles have been part of this civilization. It is safe to conclude that it will definitely continue to do so. As long as people want to exercise their logical and deductive reasoning, it will continue to be published and supplied by fans and enthusiasts. This is especially true now that computer programs allow for game developers to the increase the dimensions of given Sudoku Puzzles. There is virtually an indefinite limit to how difficult one of these puzzles could get.

Puzzle

A puzzle is a problem or enigma that challenges ingenuity. In a basic puzzle one is intended to piece together objects in a logical way in order to come up with the desired shape, picture or solution. Puzzles are often contrived as a form of entertainment, but they can also stem from serious mathematical or logistical problems — in such cases, their successful resolution can be a significant contribution to mathematical research

Solutions to puzzles may require recognizing patterns and creating a particular order. People with a high inductive reasoning aptitude may be better at solving these puzzles than others. Puzzles based on the process of inquiry and discovery to complete may be solved faster by those with good deduction skills.

Alphabet Preschool Ideas And Themes

When it comes to choosing an activity, alphabet preschool crafts are a great way for teaching new skills. Literacy is an important aspect of early learning and teaching the alphabet is critical to future success. When selecting an activity, alphabet preschool crafts, and lesson plans can ensure that the project you are working on is age appropriate, appealing to the child, and fun.

A great way to introduce your activity, alphabet preschool crafts, and lessons is by using an alphabet theme. Your alphabet theme will consist of a variety of educational activities, stories, songs, and more. By providing age appropriate resources your theme will be a success. There are many storybooks that will play an integral role in your alphabet theme. Some popular choices include Chicka Chicka Boom Boom by Bill Martin Jr. and Alphabet City by Stephen T. Johnson. However, there are numerous alphabet books available at your local library, and these give you the freedom to create an alphabet theme based on your choice of book.

Coolest Baby Shower Game Ideas

Coolest Baby Shower Game Ideas For Fresh And Unique Twists On Classic Crowd Pleasers

Looking for some unique baby shower game ideas?

Before making any game decision which you are going to spend hours of preparation before the baby shower, I'll want to tell you the most popular types of baby shower games and other details that will make your Shower planning better.

The first type, games for creating memories.

If you're good at creating scrapbook items, why not make some cute items for the parents-to-be to take home as reminders of this wonderful day?

As I know, most of these projects can be turned into great group activities.

Still have no clue?

For example, have you ever wondered what to do with over 100 guests at a baby shower? Oops, it's extremely difficult to coordinate some of the traditional baby shower games, so why not make a placemat for each guest and let them doodle?

Crosswords, word scrambles, matching games…they can all be added. Just cut out some of your favorite printable baby shower games and paste them to both sides of a piece of paper.

Then decorate with baby pictures and such, then take it to your local copy store, like Kinkos, and have them print the page on pastel colored paper. At the Shower, guests can fill in the puzzles, or just doodle. Have a small prize for the first person who has both sides filled out correctly.

Ok, the next one would be the coed Shower games.

Let's face it: More and more baby showers are including new Dads and couples, so why do you think Dads want to be left out of the fun?

You will say, "I need those baby shower game ideas talk a lot about the parents-to-be, not just the mom-to-be."

No problem.

When you decide to celebrate a new life with the New Dad together, here is a few hints:

- Get the male guests to buy-in before hand, and agree to play games

- Invite more than 3 guys - don't let the dad-to-be stay alone at the baby shower.

- Don't play those ooh-and-aah types of girls' games - they are not suitable for men, like measure Mom's tummy or talk about "girl-stuff" like birth stories or labor.

- Make your game ideas competitive and fun to get the guys out their seats and love to play, like the famous Guys and Dolls and Baby Jeopardy (of course, then the men will most likely say "that's so easy, any man can do it better"… and let them find out they can't!)

You can even get guys involving into the scrapbook making during your coed baby shower. The outcome is usually great.

And how about having activities with no winners?

Yes, I mean it and people love it too!

Do you know baby shower games don't always need to have a winner? Sometimes just an activity provides all the fun you need, like baby story which is all about gathering the baby essentials.

You will use words that are brand names or names of products that are presented to the parents-to-be as the story is read. Just put in the Mom-to-be's name - and Dad's too, if he's at the baby shower party. The words in BOLD are brand names or names of products to be presented as the words are read. You can even get creative and add new products into the story.

The last and my most favorite one, the pencil and paper game.

Pencil and paper based baby shower game ideas are always a great addition to any Shower because they require the least materials and usually the shortest prep time. A very popular choice is the Baby Safety Bingo.

You can create a baby shower bingo game card with answers in each square – which means your guests will want to pay attention because there's going to be a quiz!

Tips: It also means you will need to create a quiz ahead of time. As you read quiz questions aloud, each guest marks the right answer box, or uses a Hershey's Kiss to cover the appropriate square on their bingo card to match five in a row, up, down, or diagonal. (U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission's Baby Safety Checklist can be found at: www.cpsc.gov)

Quiz questions should include things like "One of these will prevent children from falling down stairs" and "If burst or un-inflated, these can be a choking hazard to young children" - where the answers in the Bingo square are "baby gate" and "balloons."

Keep a Sharp Mind with Games

Have you ever forgotten where you put your car keys? Have you spent time searching for your sunglasses when they were perched on top of your head? Don't laugh. Even I have done that! Today's culture refers to these scenarios as "senior moments". While these senior moments can be quite entertaining they can also point to the possibility that your mind is not as focused as it could be.

Your mind can become "dull" if you have been out of school for awhile or engage in the same repetitive tasks each day. In other words, your brain is on cruise control when you should always strive to learn and stretch your mind. I have a grandmother that is 92 years old and is sharp as a tack. She keeps her mind sharp by continually learning new ideas, facts, and solving puzzles.

Many ask what activities they can do to keep their mind sharp. Online games and puzzles are perfect activities to sweep the cobwebs out of your brain. You need to keep your brain cells humming. You can work on creativity with visual art puzzles. You can work on logical thought process through number and letter puzzles. Classic crossword puzzles and a competitive game of scrabble are great places to start.

You can tune up your observation skills by playing visual oriented games, including the classic jigsaw puzzle. You can complete jigsaw puzzles online and not have to worry about losing a puzzle piece under your couch. Yes, I've done that too. You can also work through puzzles where you have to observe the differences between two pictures that appear identical at first glance. These puzzles are fun and addictive. They also provide a great avenue for focusing your mind.

Are you looking for a comprehensive set of mind games? Take a peak at Mind Machine. This game contains different types of activities that will have your mind stretched to its limit. You can adjust the level of difficulty so the entire family can play. The difficulty levels include: easy, normal, hard, and insane.

Mind Machine provides ten different games that include: matching, mathematics, repeating patterns, and observation skills. You race against time and try to achieve a high score. This game integrates visual elements with logic, number sequence, and reading skills. The graphics and music are entertaining. It is a complete workout for the mind. One of the games in Mind Machine is called "Totem Pole". You have to place missing pieces on a totem pole by matching color and design. Another fun game involves figuring out the number of cubes in a picture. They change the arrangement and number of cubes to keep you on your toes.

Play puzzles and online games to keep your mind fit and healthy. Online games provide stimuli to many of your senses and are an entertaining way to keep your neurons firing in your brain. There are puzzles and online games available for everyone and will suit just about any interest. Have fun exploring the different types of puzzles and games available. Not only will you have fun, but you will ward off "senior moments". Or at least try too…

Jigsaw Puzzles, A Great Gift With A Lot To Offer

Educational Jigsaw Puzzles

Educational Jigsaw Puzzles, How Educational Are They?

Many companies advertise their products as being educational. How much of this terminology is sales promotion and jargon, and how much is fact?

As an educator for many years, I can say with authority, that there is educational value in all types of jigsaw puzzles. The skills acquired and practiced in completing jigsaw puzzles are a foundational part of successful learning. Doing jigsaw puzzles develops several functions of the brain simultaneously as a child has fun and also learns. Most notably developed in this learning process are the abilities to reason, deduce, analyze, sequence, and develop logical thought and problem solving skills. Physically, eye-hand coordination and spatial awareness are also required to complete a jigsaw puzzle.

Putting these benefits aside, I want to look particularly at the jigsaw puzzles that are labeled “Educational”. These puzzles are designed to teach a specific learning objective. Some examples of these might be a jigsaw puzzle map of the world, or of the solar system. The manufacturers claim that such puzzles will teach a child those specific facts. What educational value in reality do these types of puzzles contain?

Firstly the degree of the educational value of these types of puzzles is dependant on how the puzzles are used in the learning process. For example, let us suppose that the learning objective is to learn about the geography of the United States of America, specifically the position of the individual states. You buy a puzzle picturing all the states and their position in the country, and give it to the child to do. Will the child ace a test on the States? Probably not! I’m sure that some learning will take place, but it will be limited and a few weeks later very little of the learning would be retained. To the child the learning process of doing that puzzle would be similar to any jigsaw puzzle that they do. Their focus on the states and where they fit is limited to the process of completing the puzzle.

In order to maximize the educational value of a jigsaw puzzle, it needs to part of the learning process, but not all of it.

Children have different styles of learning and an advantage of a jigsaw puzzle is that it does involve using more than one type of learning aptitude in the process of completing it. The most obvious learning style for a puzzle is the visual. In doing a puzzle of the USA the child will see the overall shape and also how the various states fit together to complete the whole. Jigsaw puzzles involve both the global (big picture) and analytic (details) aspects of learning. Puzzles are also good for the kinesthetic tendencies of learners. Kinesthetic learners learn best by practical hands on activities. For those with a auditory preference in learning, conversation about the learning and the correlations in the puzzle combined with the overall learning objectives, needs to happen at the same time as the puzzle is being done.

However the greatest educational benefit comes when the jigsaw puzzle is done as part of the overall learning objective. A jigsaw puzzle can be used to introduce a new subject as well as reinforce learning that has already occurred. The educational value increases to the extent that the subject of the puzzle is meaningful to the knowledge the child already has. To the degree that the child can correlate his prior knowledge with the puzzle experience, the more educational value is gained.

The jigsaw puzzle can also create new learning experiences. These experiences can then be developed in many other ways for an overall learning experience. For example, in doing a puzzle on American Geography, famous landmarks located on the puzzle could then be looked up and researched in books or on the Internet. Stories can be read or told about historical events that occurred. The actual size of an American state could be explored by working out how long it would take to travel across by car or train. The learning possibilities are endless.

Some educational puzzles such as ‘Faces and Places’ and ‘The Map of the Solar System’ ,produced by the Great American Puzzle Company come accompanied by a guide book that can be used to get the maximum educational benefit and value from the jigsaw puzzles.

In conclusion, it can be said that all jigsaw puzzles have educational value to some extent. The puzzles that are advertised as ‘educational’ can be of great educational value if introduced, not in isolation, but as part of a specific learning goal that has both relevance and purpose for the child.

Any time spent doing a jigsaw puzzle with your child will make it a more meaningful and memorable experience. Don’t just give your child a present of a jigsaw puzzle-instead give your child an educational experience and a memory that will last a lifetime.
